I have music/video/photos on a Thecus NAS. The data is available via SMB and via a UPnP called TwonkyMedia.

I have a *new as of October 2011 with wifi* WDTV Live hooked up to a TV.

I can use the WDTV Live to play media from the NAS either by SMB or by UPnP. No problem, except that it requires the TV on.

Can I use my android phone to select what media is played without having the TV on? I have the android application for remote control but as most of you know, that is only a replica of the IR remote.

If there is not a dedicated ap for this, can I use some sort of UPnP server -> renderer -> player type approach through my phone?

If this is never going to work with this device should I buy something else?
