Hi, I have a number of MKV files and wondered if there is any decent software that can convert them into PS3 compatible files?

I guess .mp4 is the best format to convert to(?), I would like decent quality conversions.

Thanks in advance, any recommendations are grateful  :)

I saw in another post that you have a Live Streamer.  They play MKV without conversion.
Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1
WDTV Live
1.02.21 WDLXTV 0.5.1.4 (Beta)
Linksys - WUSB600N USB Adapter
DLink - Dir-655 Router
Atheros - AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
XBMC - The Future of Television

I've ever done it by this video converting software. After load MKV files, choose PS3 as output format, and then the conversion begins.

PS3 video format is limited. MKV files will not be supported buy Sony PS3. Thus, to play MKV on PS3, the easiest method is to re-encode MKV to PS3 compatible format. And as far as I know H.264 MP4 format is the most compatible one. Encoding video is an extremely long process which will take hours off a normal conversion time. So, a yet professional video converter is the key. You can searche a proper one from Google.
You can refer to Re-encode/Stream MKV to PS3 to get the work done.

This is available for free if you get and install it in the next 16 hours and 50 minutes from me posting this.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/leawo-video-converter-53/

It says it converts to most media player formats including PS3 from lots of formats including mkv, I haven't tried it but if you get it before the giveaway runs out it wont cost you anything to try it and if you like it you dont have to buy it like you would with trial versions.

Freemake Video Converter is free and dead simple to use.
Also lets you "hard code" the subs if your MKV has them.

Just make sure you do a custom install and un-select all the "open candy" freeware BS.

:) No, I'm the traitor because I'm going to try one of those cheap Android boxes I asked about in "everything else." I kept waiting for WD to get their act together, but now I'm going to try something else. I'll probably still keep my Live hooked up in the living room, but my original version unit in my bedroom is probably headed to the closet. Any chance the new version of the Xbox is going to support MKV directly?

Freemake Video Converter is the easiest to use...and free...just make sure not to install the Open Candy "freeware" BS...always do a custom install...

Handbrake is pretty easy as well...newest version also handles 10-bit MKV...
...although 10-bit still pretty rare these days...most 10-bit video is anime stuff.

I used Handbrake "nightly" to convert a few 10-bit MKV to 8-bit MKV so my WD SMP could play the video.

Lots of web advice on this subject such as:

http://www.ilikemall.com/topics/convert-mkv-to-mp4-mac.html

Once they are mp4 (or you can convert mkv to a avi format that PS3 reads) they will then run on your PS3.

The program converts between lots of different video formats.
