Ok long winded question but will try to shorten it.
Currently to watch movies over my ethernet my pc needs to be on to see my external hdd.
In a last attempt to try and watch my external hdd with the pc OFF; could i use an RJ45 -USB adaptor which would go through my modem hub?

Modem Hub - (RJ45 - USB) - External HDD

I know you will all say buy a NAS but i dont want one at present.

Thoughts please.....

This was what i was thinking of plugging in to the back of my modem/hub

I doubt anything short of a NAS will work with the computer off but for the price of this adaptor, it is surely worth a try.
