I would like to try WDLXTV Live firmware but have some questions to be sure I don't accidentally brick my unit by flashing the wrong firmware.

I am currently using WDTV Live firmware 1.03.39 so I either need to downgrade to 1.02.21 or upgrade to 1.03.49 before installing the matching WDLXTV firmware.  Is this true?

After installing the appropriate WDLXTV Live firmware  I should be able to immediately view my movies using Network Shares?  ie surfacely nothing would change except the OSD ?

From here on I can then change OSD, add movie sheets etc

Any advise whether to use 1.02.21 or 1.03.49  ?

Thanks

No.  You can flash any available WDLXTV firmware over any existing factory firmware...IE, you can flash 1.02.21 WDLXTV over 1.06.14 factory.

True.  However, now you will be able to use NFS to view your movies which is much better than simply network shares.

Yes.  Also depending on the version you choose, you can use plugins etc... and either version can use UMSP plugins.

Any advise whether to use 1.02.21 or 1.03.49  ?

1.03.49 is now an old version.  Your choice is between 1.02.21 WDLXTV 0.5.0.0 or 1.05.04 WDLXTV 0.5.0.0

Both those releases are not public releases.  For public releases I can only find :

1.02.21 WDLXTV_LIVE_0.4.7.3  or 1.03.49 _V_ WDLXTV_LIVE 0.4.7.3

What is the "_V_" in the 1.03.49 version ?

Tks

It looks like the only main difference between 1.05 and 1.03.49 base firmware is autores? What is autores ?   Tks

Autores works in both but 1.03.* was set by B-Rad while 1.05.* was set by WD.

It is the ability of the WDTV to identify the resolution of the video and adjust to display the best possible frame rate for it.  If you were to play a 23.96 FPS video at 60 frame per seconds you would actually lose the odd frame.  Not noticeable by eye but after a while it would sort of jump or seem like it misses a bit....

Maybe someone can explain this better.

I think I understand Auto Res from your reply.

In a previous response you said that 1.03.49  is old firmware but I notice that the 1.02.21 and  1.03.49 both  0.4.7.3 versions are released same time. I  thought that the 1.03.49 would be the later version base version?  Which version are you using ?  Tks

I am using 1.02.21 based firmware.  The newest releases are:
1.02.21 WDLXTV 0.5.0.0 (for the live only) and
1.05.04 WDLXTV 0.5.0.0 (for the live and also for the Live+)

BTW, the V and the B in the version number means:
V = Live
B = Live Plus

May I ask why you are still at 1.02.21 based firmware ?

I am still wondering whether it's worth the potential headaches changing to custom firmware because my WDTV live Std firmware 1.03.39 is very stable . Of course no fancy OSD , movie sheets etc .

Tks

It all depends on what you want from your WDTV.  I wanted to be able to play some adult videos, get a better Media Navigation (better FF, Rew, etc....) and MediaMark (marks movies/tv shows that have been watched).  These last two plugins can only be used with 1.02.21 custom firmware.  I don't care for social network and therefore stayed with 1.02.21 based custom firmware.

I too have no interest in social networking etc.  I just want to stream movies from my computer to my main TV reliably . So right now I am fairly happy with 1.03.39 Original Firmware . I was just thinking of experimenting  a bit with custom software to make the OSD look nicer . I think this is only possible with the custom firmware revision you are using . So I might just start with that one.   Tks

@RavRob,

The NTSC frame rate is 29.97 instead of 30 frames per second because when the USA changed from black and white transmission to colour transmission they needed to change the frequency.

The time base clock for the original black and white television signal was derived from the mains transmission. USA 60 Hertz; Europe 50 Hertz.

That is also why you have a digital HD reference frequency of USA 60 Hertz and Europe 50 Hertz.
