Then you can look for current firmware ... because you have been taking the right ...

The version is 1.01.79 only in EU, why do not you think the FW at wdc.com

Furthermore, you ask for another FW which then plays the latest *. mkv files ...
Your brother has the "LIVE" you have the "Gen2" ... the latest FW will still continue to live in supported and further developed, while the FW is 1.01.77 or 1.01.79, the latest official FW for the Gen2. This is also keen that I do with the live much longer and, for most people much more interesting, since this network is capable of!

I hope I could help you!

Greetings
JBT

I play a great many .mkv as well as .avi, .mp4, and 'ogm video files and dvd/bluray directories. Most older and newer files play fine, but some do not due to unsupported resolutions and/or codecs. I've had a few .mp4 files that had audio or sub lag during playback. It is sometimes possible to fix that type of issue by converting the file to a different format and/or resolution.

I'm quite pleased overall with the ease of copying files to a usb drive, then connecting the drive to the Gen2 media player and doing some easy browsing with the remote. It usually takes just a couple of minutes to transfer a large file(s) to the usb, hook it up to the media player, boot, and start playback. In the event a file doesn't work, we just reset the system menu to default and go on to the next video while we either convert the unsupported file or watch it on a different device, such as pc or ps3. It's a lot simpler than having my tv connected to the computer as a second monitor and playing the video on the computer with copy to second monitor.
