First I used T&C method and successfully installed  firmware. Then was lazy to read the posts on forum and bought wireless adapter which was not supported  (wrong chipset)  , took me quite some time to realize that, switched to RTFM method and read compatibility list.
Passed on the adapter to "charity" and bought new one Edimax  EW77189Un.
After few plug/unplug /reboot/reset/Google  procedures managed to guess working configuration.
Had to change in RT2870STA.dat
WirelessMode=9 or WirelessMode=7 to get it working.
Adatper conected at 56Mps.
Then I  mounted the folders on NS2300 with cifs option.
Movies played perfectly. Then tried to play HD  movie (1080,720) - NO GO.
So since both adapter and router supports N protocol, next step was again plug/unplug /reboot/reset/Google.
First thing I've done is that I've plugged in adapter in WIN 7 box and checked if it is working. It was, but again on 54Mps. Messed around with settings on router/adapter but with no success. Finally learned that speeds over 54Mps (or better say for N protocol to work) with WEP security is NO GO. Has to be WPA2PSK (WPA2 PERSONAL) with AES/TPIK security.  After I've changed the security on router connection speed went up to 270Mps.
Plugged the adapter to WDTV rebooted and yet another NO GO.
Changed from EncrypType=TPIK to EncrypType=AES rebooted and success.
Maybe changing HT_DisallowTKIP=1 to HT_DisallowTKIP=0 would allow connection with TPIK EncrypType but since it's working with AES did not try.
Tried to play HD movies from NS2300 and yet another time NO GO, so ended up googling again.
Found out that cifs mounted volume do not provide enough speed for HD streaming so tried to mount nfs share on NAS. Got various messages (I'm Linux dummy) which basically meant I was unsuccessful in mounting nfs.
Since working with telnet and WDTV is pretty awkward (for me at least) , I've setup virtual ubuntu on my WIN 7 box and tried to mount from there. After losing quite few hours trying (as I've said I'm completely ignorant regarding linux) to mount learned that :
a) big difference with smallcaps - uppercaps, folder name should be exactly written ie :
"xmount 192.168.5.103:/volume1/video  nfsvideos nfs" is NO GO
while xmount "192.168.5.103:/VOLUME1/VIDEO  nfsvideos nfs" works like a charm.
b) NS2300 has to be updated to the latest firmware for NFS to work.
Tried playing HD (1080 & 720) movies and SUCCESS.
 :D :D :D
That's it.
Boris

I had some problems but wanted to share the experience

Using a belkin F5D7050 Version 3125 (RT73)
I get to stream 720p over wireless using samba/CIFS
But is really peculiar
It can play flawless if the shared folders are in hdd  internal (eide,sata) in the server pc,but not so good if the shares are in an USB hard drive connected in that same pc.
Using the USB drive the movie start stuttering after 10 minutes
Using the internal HDD movies play flawless.
Of course those 720p files are not a treat regarding bitrate,but still create problems in certain setups.

Now,I tried to use NFS instead,and no matter what I do or what options I use for xmount (hard,soft,intr,nolock,and so on) the folder shows up EMPTY in the wdtv.
Cannot find what the problem could be,tried many things posted in this same forum.

Also,was anyone able to compile drivers for realtek 8191 ?  (belkin wireless N F5D8083)

Has anyone tried this adapter from Hercules (http://www.hercules.com/es/wifi/bdd/p/104/hercules-wireless-n-usb-mini-hwnum-300-/) with the WDHDTV??

I think it's the perfect companion for the WD, as its small size and black color is perfect with the player.

I've read around the forums that there are drivers that support this adapter in Linux, so I think it's possible to make it works with the WD...

Any suggestions will be welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Mind you that it takes some minutes (about 3 or 4) after the WDTV boots to have wireless working. Don't know if anyone else see also this kind of behaviour. I guess that this was the main reason why it took me so long to have this working, I turned off the device too early :).

Regards

I tried to connect wireless with d-link dwl-g122 (rt73) C1 3.00 firmware version. I installed wdlxtv 5.8.1.
It didn't work, wdtv would halt during the boot without ever coming to menu. For one time it worked, i don't know why because later was gone again.
Act light on stick never blinked.
Then I tried ext3-boot and still no go. It worked without DHCP only and veeery slow. I tried to change all the settings in files. I also tried both wireless app.bin ( Zorander and Smartp ).

I downgraded to 5.3.2. firmware and it started to work. However I would like to use it with 5.8.1.
One thing I realised with 5.8.1. is that when I put encription to WPA2 finnaly I got my usb wireless stick to blink act light. Then in log file I see it connected to wireless but didn't get IP with or without DHCP. With NONE or WEP it gets stuck before. In log it halts at: Dec 31 16:00:55 WDTV-405d0 user.warn kernel: => usb_rtusb_open

If any of you can help I would appreciate that.

I made a driver that worked for your chipset (for sure if its the linksys wusb54GC version 3):

Using this files in root of h usb stick or HDD :

-------------------------
wireless-mod-rt.app
-------------------------
rt73sta.dat

(using this setting)
CountryRegion=0
CountryRegionABand=7
WirelessMode=0
SSID=XXXX  ----------->edit to yours
NetworkType=Infra
Channel=0
AuthMode=OPEN  -------------> I would try his frst
EncrypType=NONE  -----------> and this
(the rest is standard)
---------------------------------------------------------------

net.config
(using this settings)
HOST=wdtv
GROUP=XXXX                  ------------>edit to yours
MTU=1492                       ----------------> look in your router for this value if available
insmod /tmp/mnt/sda1/rt73.ko
DHCP=yes
#IP=192.168.0.190
#GW=192.168.0.1
#NM=255.255.255.0
#DNS1=192.168.0.1
ifconfig $MDEV up
WLAN_CFG=rt73sta.dat
WLAN_LOAD=rt73.ko
WLAN_UP=yes
WLAN_SLEEP=1
SUPPRESS_OTHERS=yes
--------------------------------------------

This is my working setup.
You should try first without WEP,make it open,once it works you can heck if WEP works.

Make sure the files have the names correct,linux is picky about it. (for example : rt73sta.dat is not the same as rt73STA.dat )

Hope this help you.

Hi ,
Thanks for the reply. I followed the steps:
1. Installed WDLXTV enhanced WDTV firmware 0.5.8.1 + core-extras.app.bin-0.2 + Optware for WDTV
2. Rebooted the system
3. Disabled Security on my Router
4. Inserted the formatted flash with net.config, wireless-mod-rt.app.bin and and rt61sta.dat making all the changes you mentioned
a. Used http://rt2400.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/rt2400/source/rt73/Module/rt73sta.dat
b. I was using channel 3 so i changed channel to 3
c. i used group as WORKGROUP
d. I used MTU as 1500 Which was mentioned in my router
5. i booted WDTV with Belkin Wifi adapter attached to the left of the WDTV USB and the flash driver with the files to the main USB
6. after 1 min i am getting Home screen with NO IP

Please let me know if i missed any steps. I did the same almost 4 times but could not get IP.

I had a really funny problem and wanted to share how i solved it:

I used a MSI US54SE Wlan stick to connect to my Wifi with WEP only for some time. Worked fine.

Then i switched to WPA2 encryption but i couldn't get it to run, although the net.conf and wpa_supplicant were correct. Out of a hunch i copied (dd'ed) the complete partition from my initially used 256 MB USB stick to a 512 USB stick.
That was it, now it works. Apparently, USB sticks can be to slow some times.

Cheers, WD

Do the same again but installing log-aver.app.bin in root
Then post what messages.txt say here.
Only way to troubleshoot is by looking at logs
