Good point, when I updated mine (successfully) nothing was attached except network & HDMI.
Unlike others have posted, I have NOT noticed any change in performance, function or appearance.

If your box was bricked in this update did you have any external drives connected at the time ?
Trying to think of why it works for some but not others.
I flashed mine with nothing attached except networking and video.

I was connected via ethernet, toslink, and HDMI, with no usb drives attached. I am experiencing the rebooting issue, as others have stated,
and intermittent network disconnect issues, which are not being seen in two other WD Live boxes (one fw 1.01.17 and two fw 1.01.11).
I am preparing to "exchange" my WD Live fw 1.01.17, for a new WD Live @bestbuy. The same thing I had to do, after the last fw update.

I updated from .11 to .17 via a wireless N Band connection with no issues it seems.  It took about 4 minutes and it rebooted 3 times before coming completely up.  It could not find my shares so I turned the unit off unplugged it for 30 seconds then everything seems to be working as in ver .11  Hopefully this is just getting ready for other updates so it seems.  I should mention I DO NOT have any external HD connected and my wireless is two stories down in the basement.

Worked fine for me. The menus seem clearer somehow, not sure what changed there. No other discernible changes.

1.01.17 upgrade went with out a hitch, hard wired thru a linksys wrt320n router to linksys sr224 10/100 switch. with USB storage attached but still having issue with seeing thumbs. it does seem abit faster on the interface side :)

Updated from .11 to .17 over wire without issues. No perceptible differences after upgrade.
Remote did stop working while fast forwarding so I had to unplug the machine once it reached end of file. I don't think this has to do with the upgrade because the FF function acted kinda funny with another movie in the same folder just prior to updating. Probably just a coincidence.

Really want file transfer via network to be fixed. Here's hoping WD releases an update worth talking about soon.

1.01.17 upgraded easily.  I have wired ethernet with DHCP; connections were network wired, HDMI, and toslink wtih no attached usb drives.  I have noticed that stereo over HDMI is no longer working.  stereo is still present via toslink.  Digital audio works both over HDMI and Toslink.  Maybe a little faster menus.  Keep trying I like my WD TV Live.
ADDENDUM: Sound issue resolved after unplugging unit and restarting it.

Not upgraded yet but there is something that is not clear for me and I don't understand the purpose of this release.

Reading the change log, the goal is to allow other updates to work with less issues.
Does this means that if you buy in one month a WDTV that is in a 2 month old stock in the shop so in the very first firmware you will have to install 1.01.17 before moving to let's say 1.01.18 ?.

What will prevent "old" firmware WDTV live from migrating directly from 1.01.11 to 1.01.18  ? because today if you are in the very first firmware and connect the WDTV to the network it will update directly to 1.01.17 without upgrading to 1.01.11 first... so in a few month what will prevent the device from migrating from the very first firmware directly to 1.01.30 ?.

If all releases after the 1.01.17 contains 1.01.17 update just to prevent errors due to WD units migrating directly from 1.01.11 to 1.01.xx then what is the purpose of the 1.01.17 ?

Can someone of WD clarify this ?

Thx

David

they fixed the update mechanism as described in their release note - that's ok for me so far but what made me really laugh was this ...

You’ve been asking, so now it’s here…http://ow.ly/VnqU

they sound so satisfied with the new firmware release - wake up WD, stop dreaming and start coding. you've miles to go ;D

Update from 1.01.11 to 1.01.17. Wired connection with DHCP. Two USB HDDs attached during upgrade. Upgrade worked without problems. After downloading, it rebooted twice - that was it. Connecting to XP shares worked without problems, all settings unchanged. Youtube is working as before (without login).
