I had a WDTV (1st gen - not the live) and had it hooked up through an optical cable to my receiver. I was able to listen to 5.1 surround with a MKV file I had (when the box was set to digital).

I just returned it last night and picked up a WDTV LIVE, hooked it up and guess what...I get no sound when I set the WDTV LIVE to digital and play that same MKV file. When it's set to stereo it down-mixes the sound to 2 channel and I can hear it then.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Why would it work fine with the old box and now not work with the new LIVE box?  :P

I may or may not have the same issue as you. Try setting audio to "Stereo" and see if that works. If it does then I suspect you are having the same issue as me with the firmware and I would recommend rolling back to firmware version 1.02.21 here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5800
