I'm very disappointed by this upgrade, although the upgrade process worked very nicely, copied the files to a USB drive, plugged in the drive and the WDTV immediately provided me the option to upgrade, what I did of course, however

duplicate thumbnails still here, for a bug that is reported so many times and I think not only here in the forum but many users certainly have sent a mail to the WD Support this should have been fixed, especially as this was never an issue with the original WDTV box. It makes browsing through your video collections unusable, especially for all users I have here

buffering of movies over SMB still is poor and high peak-rates brings artefacts and audio sync problems etc,

movies converted with Turbo.264 HD still don't work, so it seems implementation of h.264 decoding is still buggy (not saying the Turbo.264 HD Software has no issues, but at least the movies play on the original WDTV without any flaws

Are we talking streaming BD rips here?  I've never tested those, don't have any!  But your h.264 statement seems strange to me because I've been playing them for 6 hours (6x1hour eps) lately and they have been flawless.  The problem I have is with .mp4 container videos.  Otherwise, demuxing and repackaging the same movie into an mkv will play like any other h264 video in an mkv.

So to say that the box has problems with h.264 outright may be a non sequitur.

I agree with your thumbnail problem and I have a niggling issue related to them, too.  The contrast on thumbnails seems to change when you start to browse them.  A bit annoying!

Do you have a thread explaining your streaming problems?  I'm curious.  Network streaming has never ever dropped while watching anything I have.  But then again, I don't have the most demanding media.

TIA

The network shares flakyness issue still not fixed or even mentioned is inexcusable.

What about no 5.1 sound for HD mkv files? Right now have to switch to stereo to have sound.

I can confirm streaming problems with 1080p content over GigE .
Flaky shares (SMB/CIFS) which either don't show up or say have no media available.
Flaky media server support ( I have FreeNAS with uPNP service enabled and DNLA profile selected), some files don't show up (mainly mkv for some reason, all avi show tho) or media shares are not accessible/visible.

I've had it with this box...

Anyone else had their WDTV disappear off the network after this update? I share the drives connected to the WDTV out across the network and it has all been working very well until I restarted after the firmware update. Now it seems to have disappeared. I'm using a Mac so presumably it is not advertising the shared drive correctly/or it has changed subtly in a way which breaks Macs.

Hello everyone. then just update the wd live and I have many problems, has not given any finding or anything when I loaded the new firm, but now the 3 trailers that had previously played them right now they are playing, just play one of them, all three are equal, same resolution, same fps, I set the fps of the wd live but nothing, stays as locked, both from pendrive as from external hd seems to be executed but not the videos play, leaving the bar down time and what is playing but does nothing, I give the play and after a while it changes the icon to pause and give it back to not play anything, if I go to the menu will slow down all the menus. What do I do? Could return to the previous firmware? I have downloaded the firmware first main post, I guess I'll have to edit the file and put a wdtvlive.ver to load this, is not it?. Oh another thing, if I give the trailer if you catch me and then one that grabs me and not play anything, no video avi or mpg that has any quality, I have to live off the wd and then again in the time to run those two trailers were relock. 23.976 fps are all three. I hope you can help me. If it works by loading the firmware and run again first trailers, wait until you go back further updates before upgrading.

Biggest disappointment for me (aside from the thumbnail thing) is that I still can't play my .MP4s.  They're unwatchable with the audio hitching that occurs every 30-60 seconds.

My problems with streaming are that movies with high peak-rates, I talk about movies with average rate of 25-30Mbps and peak-reates up to 50Mbps have problems typically seen when you play movies without sufficient ahead buffering, like in the internet. This are pure BD RIPs without converting, so to say with the original bit-rate.

Movies with lower bit-rates and especially movies that do not have high peak-rates play perfect. I did not say I expected that BD Rips play without problems, but seeing this issue that is the dropouts I see are likely caused by insufficient ahead buffering. I also think this is the case because playing a movie is almost instantly. I would expect some seconds of delay before playing.

To verify this I will setup a UPnP Server as streaming does not suffer from small buffers like SMB does

The h.264 issue is that movies independant of the container but converted by Turbo.264 HD stutter (mp4 and mkv). Other movies I have downloaded or converted with other tools don't show these issues.

I will investigate more here as well, I'll convert a DVD with different tools and encapsulate it to different containers and then compare the result.

Are you using SMB or NFS?

Is there a way to use NFS without a hack? I've found with other media players that using NFS makes a big difference with Bluray streams.

I really want to buy a WDTV Live, because I've read it uses the latest and fastest Sigma chipset available. But I'm reluctant to, if I have to watch my Bluray rips from my NAS with stuttering because of network issues

I was looking forward to the update to fix this. It has got to be the top priority surely! It's not good enough at all IMO. I can see the Live on my XP machines consistently so WHY don't the damn XP shares show consistently on the Live?

Networking still doesn't seem to be fixed.  :(

I have had similar problems with mine. I have 2 XP sp3 machines with shares that i could browse remotely from each other. However, the only thing that showed on the WD TV live was my NAS. So I did a little of troubleshooting and figured that i had "messenger" service disabled on both of the machines (note this is not a windows/live messenger, it just networking service that for some kind of network messages - like alarms etc). After enabling this service, i could instantly see both my PCs on the WD TV Live. It has been working ever since without any issues (except high bit-rate files wont play). You can activate this widows service under "control panel" --> "administrative tools" --> "services" --> "Messenger"

Let us know if it helped.

There are a lot of people in this thread with problems.  I recommend that is you are having problems with the update that are shared with others, that you start a thread in the BUG area I just set up dedicated to the Live.  Be as specific as possible.  This is just the first update of what I assume will be many.  That is the nature of these products.  As networking is more complex, with more variables, and is new to the Live, this is where most problems will occur.

cbscpe: your post is great because you give a lot of info and describe the problem.

liveuser: there is not enough info .  All my MKVs play 5.1 audio just fine.  And "network shares flakyness issue" is ambiguous.  We have no idea what your issue really is.

Be specific and give tech details.  Threads in the BUG area that are well composed and give highly detailed information are the ones that are going to be addressed.

Just trying to help out. :)
WDTV LIVE with current official FW > HDMI > DVDO > Sony CRT Projector 150" 16/9 screen.  Toslink audio to Yamaha DTS receiver. No Network set up yet.

Does anyone have access to the old firmware that B-rad posted?

He gave a rapidshare link, but I always seem to end up at the site when no free downloads are given. I really need to downgrade. (it's the out of sync audio/video with mp4 that kills it for me. Already described above.)

Edit: I finally got it, and I've uploaded it here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2205332/WDTVLIVE_FW_1.01.00.zip
Easier than rapidshare which seems to be busy most of the time.

Downgrading solved it for me. Now all the mp4 files play as before. phew!

I was a bit iffy about upgrading - often doesn't pay to be an early adopter in these cases BUT couldn't resist in the end - just completed painlessly from a USB stick and WHAT DO YOU KNOW!! all my previously hidden network shares on XP have shown up, together with all shared folders on an old P4 which just happened to be on the network at the time

Good start eh! - hope it continues to be positive

Trying the new firmware out tonight - Noticed something odd/different with VOB files

Shared a DVD drive and tried playing a DVD through network shares/folders - worked fine (it refused to find the DVD share on the original firmware) but I noticed that it didn't matter which VOB file I selected it always played the main movie - it also did this with some stored on the hard drive under Video_TS folders, but in some other cases, the individual files were playable - weird.... (and a few wouldn't play at all..??)

Also on the original firmware, playing a sequence of VOBs was interrupted at the beginning of each with the info bar - now its seamless - great!

And as the unit remembers stop points even after being turned off, chapters aren't so important, so playing VOB's seamlessly is a useful method of replay without transcoding
