Sometimes it seems the drive I have connected to the WD TV Live turns off after some time, resulting in the blue spinning circle ad infinitum until I either reset the settings and reboot the device or power cycle the drive. Both drives I've tried this with result in the same thing happening and they're both WD My Book drives. Any solution?

perhaps you will need to mess around with the drives operational aspects using a tool like
hdparm or sdparm
to change the spindown and spinup behaviour
read up on them before use as they have the potential to really mess up a drive
