When upgrading from 1.02.11 to 1.03.01, after the WDTV rebooted to perform the upgrade, the WDTV freezes and does not respond to the remote. Only the WDTV logo is displayed.
After some time I disconnected the power, but still nothing but the logo.
I then put the firmware 1.02.11 back on the disc and fortunately it installed it and my WDTV is alive again.
But this version is not good for me.
I am using a Dane-Elec disc of 500 GB.

Always Always Always update with only a small USB stick in the WDTV !!!
WDTV LIVE with current official FW > HDMI > DVDO > Sony CRT Projector 150" 16/9 screen.  Toslink audio to Yamaha DTS receiver. No Network set up yet.

I've updated nearly a dozen times off the external hard drive and haven't had a problem yet.

Takes a lot longer with an external drive and thats when you get into problems.

JayAllan, I am sure it is a good idea to upgrade from an USB stick and I will do so the next time.
I do however agree with franks that I have upgraded many times from HDD and the downgrade to 1.02.11 was also successful from HDD.
Also, the upgrade never started, the WDTV just rebooted to start upgrading but never came that far. It instantly froze after the reboot.
(I am not doubting your advice here, just summing up facts that might help the WD guys)

My WD got problems  :'(

After upgrade to 1.03.01 it worked great the first 2 weeks.
The problem now is when I start, it's just scanning and never finnish.
First I tried the reset button, but after 3 times it still stays om the new firmware.
I then renamed the firmware to 1.03.02, updateing... reboots, and then it start up scanning again and text new firmware found is till there !
I tried upgrading from both hdd and stick...anyone got a solution??

I have the same problem. WDTV frozen after reboot before upgrade. This is clearly a very serious bug that needs to be addressed pronto.

Found a solution  ;D

1. After device reboots and freezes, i.e. WD logo shows doesn't go away, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds or more.
2. Release power button and press it again
3. Device should reboot and complete upgrade

Step 2 might not be required if device reboots after 15 seconds of pressing the power button.
