i was just wondering if there is a chance of a firmware update that will decode the dts sound internally on the wdtv? If not why is this happening, i mean it's due to the lack of hardware or wd hasn't gotten the apropriate license?

It is a licensing issue.  DTS internal decoding would add another $25 or so to each box.   Best bet now is to output it through Toslink into a DTS decoder or receiver.  This is highly unlikely to change through updates as well, however if the source code is released then I am sure there will be some homebrew workaround.   In the meantime if you are only watching MKVs then just use the PCH Audio Converter to change the DTS 5.1 to AC3 5.1   If you use a 640 bit rate you will not likely hear the difference.  Works for me and I have a $10k sound system.
WDTV LIVE with current official FW > HDMI > DVDO > Sony CRT Projector 150" 16/9 screen.  Toslink audio to Yamaha DTS receiver. No Network set up yet.
