I'm not working on the WDTV or anything else for now ! I can make my mod to be 2x3 compliant when I will have a little time...

Don't know about others, but I am sure will be happy on that day...

But since you're busy worrying about the portability of your thumbnails, what makes you think that other players adopt this ratio ? Maybe it's 2x3, 2x4 or something else... who knows !

Nothing much, but: It is already 2x3. The same thought will be in the mind of future developers... Backward compatibility. Making it to be accepted immediately. Of course, if there is an another leader in home movie players, with a larger share, they may decide to keep it different than 2x3. I agree, there is just no guarantees.

Quote from: lilibabe
So, stay stuned, I will try to see what a 2x3 will give...

Just some clarification : English version ? Big thumbnails (about 4 thumbnails per page) or small (about 12 thumbnails per page) ?

Yes, English.

Bigger thumbs than original. Thinner frames. I never understood why WD displayed 12 thumbs in the middle of the screen and not laid them out to full screen. The rest of the screen is empty.

About 4 per page? That might be too big, no? I thought your final version of osd simple mod, having 2 rows 5 thumbs each was P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

I can see why you think 4 thumbs in a row. 2:3 is taller than 3:4. So, with 2 rows, there isn't much increase in size would be available, unless full screen area can be used. 2 rows of 2:3 would need 6 thubs in each to use left and right sides of the screen.
Thus, may-be you already see it. May-be there is no option other than 1 row 4 thumbs. Or, 1 row 5 thumbs.
I don't know. I don't think I would want them to be huge. Just big. But, you have a better artistic eye than I can ever hope to have. You decide.

Thank you, lilibabe.

What about others? Anyone has any input on this?

Maybe that is something that can only be changed in the firmware, oh well...
That was quite noob of me I didnt try that disabling the library sorry that should make things simple enough for them.
Thanks for such a quick reply too.

I use it with library off. There is an image of usb device, and it is a preselected default. No other options. Very simple.

I also find that the olds get very much lost in too many movies. There is no page scrolling.
What I did was I made black thumbnails with movie genres text in gold-orange. Name them just as the genre folders but, with alt255 character preceding name (looks just like space):

Action <---this is folder name. All action movies dropped in it.
[alt255]Action.jpg <---this is the black thumbnail for action genre. Space char isn't sorted first, but alt255 does.
[alt255]Action.mkv <---this is an empty text file named mkv to activate the Action.jpg display. WDTV thinks it's a movie.
(for some reason WDTV doesn't always sort .avi first)(also, all movie names beginning with numbers, need "The" to precede the name, so that they don't get sorted before folder image.)

This produces nice genre selection first. WDTV renders black with a plastic diagonal shine, so it looks very native and nice (If not for the stupid shortcut icon that WDTV places on top of the image.)
Because I did not use "folder.jpg" method, the first thumbnail INSIDE of each folder, is still a genre thumbnail, reminding them in which folder they currently are.

This breaks hundreds of movies to scroll through into just tens per genre. However, the hard part is to decide how to determine which genre a movie belongs to, so you could expect it to be found there. I have these:

Action
Adventure
Crime
Comedy
Cartoon
Drama
Mystery and Fantasy
Sci-Fi
Non-Fiction (history, bio, documentary, research, etc.)
Home Made (their favorite)
Post-Apocalyptic
Western

If you do this, and find that some movies show up as folder thumbs instead of genre pictures, then delete the wd database, it's corrupted.

Ok, so I will try with 2x6 or 2x7 thumbnails per page (about 240px height).

@n00bie : ok, I made what you wanted (I hope !).

There's 2x6 thumbnails, size = 160x240 px.

You can download it here : http://wdtv.free.fr/osdmod/dl/simple_v2%20%5b1.03.01%5d/english/n00bie/

WOW!

Installed the "n00bie" mod and it looks awesome!

lilibabe, thank you so much! You're something, I have to tell you.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find that there are no shortcut icons in this mod! So, my custom folder pictures look great!
The thumbnail display is 2 rows by 6 thumbs and the area itself is a lot larger (about 30%) than the default wdtv firmware provides. I am able to read the titles that were totally unreadable before.
The frames of thumbnails are nice and thin, the butt-ugly original wdtv frames are gone!

I also like this mod because now that the filenames are left-justified, there is almost no scrolling going on, except for really long filenames.

I am using (relatively small by today's standards) 42 inch LCD, and even on a screen like that (not true 1080p), everything looks clean and sharp.

The 2:3 thumbnail format insures a smooth and painless transition, all I had to do is re-batch the big originals (already at 2:3 in various pixel sizes) all to a new size 160x240, that's all!

This mod is just what the WDTV needed to function properly. I am extremely happy.

Thank you, lilibabe, very much!

In effect I mean what I marked red in the picture that comes in all the pictures and icons and then if I give to videos, music or photos by folder I get an icon that is usb1 or usb2 and only appears a folder you could put as I have put in the picture? My English is 0, I am using the google translator :)

Certainly the resolution for the videos was not 162x216? and for photos and music that was?

Ok ! So, if I understand well, you want me to :

- remove the reflection on the thumbnails
- replace the icon used for USB with a folder icon as in your picture

Is it for "simple v2" version 1.03.01 ?

Video thumbnail is 180x240 px.

VIDEOS+MUSICA+FOTOS : too big for the folder (or too small font size)...

Is it possible to replace it by something like "MEDIOS" (1 line) or "MIS MEDIOS" (2 lines) ? (thx google translation !)

You could put a sample of how left with:

VIDEOS                 MIS                 MEDIOS
MUSICA              MEDIOS
FOTOS

If you can not you lot got your mod preocupes.Desde that I've used the truth is that is a thousand times better than the original and others that have gone out. A greeting from Spain
