Many posts report that the WDTV Live can't always find all shares, published from Windows 7 machines. It happens a lot here too, however: i have 3 Windows XP Home machines, so this problem is not restricted to W7. It seems to me that this is a time-out problem. Without changing anything on the share-machines, i am able to get the WDTV Live box to discover the shares just by retrying (usually no power off/on is needed). Pretty annoying though  ;)

It seems the factory firmware is less than adequate.  I am using custom firmware and all is well here.

thnx RavRob. My problems are not big, just annoying :) Anyway, to get a "better" box, i conclude that i'll need to go to custom FW, making my box WDLXTV. Is there an instructions link for dummies like me? I appreciate your time!

Edit by myself:
i found it here: http://wdlxtv.com/wdlxtv-live/

Here is a good place to start
http://wiki.wdlxtv.com/
And the available firmware
http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=9e3ea7c0e5303ceffafed9f927bfff1c

note that B-Rad is working on a way to make any firmware custom at will.  He even did one for the Gen3 which was shut so tight everyone thought nothing could be done with it....but there it is.

Now that's support!! WD can learn from that :-)

More questions though (i have 1.06.15_V):
Do i take 1.05.04_V-WDLXTV-Live-0.5.1.1 [flash]
Or based on the one you have: 1.02.21-WDLXTV-Live-0.5.1.1 [flash]

And then i get (main reasons for me to do this!):
access WDTV from a browser (with many more settings)
a lot of bugfixes

Well worth it i would say :-)

Thanks
Jeroen

The version you get is up to you.  I personally stick with 1.02.21 because of the customization.  Much better IMO than 1.05.04.

Again though you will need to read on the difference of each before you can make up your mind.

WDExt (1.02.21) allows me to mark my files as watched with a green dot (done automaticly), allows me to step forward and back in various increments vs simply FF or Rew.  You need to study the WDExt plugins.  1.02.21 as does the 1.5.04 also has access to all the UMSP plugins.  So both are even in this field.
