Title: The best custom firmware for WDTV G2
Post by: pH03N1x on August 20, 2010, 09:56:37 PM
Well, google was the best for my MCS7830 adapter related problem (i asked b-rad about moschip support, but he always deleted my messages from his page) - and i found the best custom firmware for G2. Check this page:

http://wdhd.ru/board/index.php?a=vtopic&t=1885

It is simply a gem: network support, ftp server, torrent client, web interface, webbased remote controller, etc etc.

Btw, do not afraid from the russian page, the firmware is english/russian, and default is english it seems.

Ah, it seems a new version is out right now, installation in progress ;)

hey pH03N1x thanks for the post. im a noob with firmware for the wdtv gen 2. can you tell what the advantages of this firmware is over the OEM firmware. I dont really care about the looks but i was hoping to gain some extra functionality. i cant read Russian so the site didnt give me any help. ive quickly looked at some other firmwares for the wd tv gen 2 but those changes seem to be mostly cosmetic from what i can tell. thanks for any help

can you point to which link is to download the firmware, thanks

Biggest advantage is the network support, including a lot of usb based wireless/wired cards. You can play files over wifi/ethernet from samba/nfs shares, and it have a nice webserver for configuration (and it have ftp server, torrent client, etc - but i guess most of them is not needed for this little device), and it support external USB DVD drives too. Im using it primary for over ethernet high-res media playback from NFS share, and working fine.

The file which one im using, is one of these links: (try the mediafire.com imho)

thanks, ive flashed with the firmware you linked to and it looks great but i must be missing something because i did not see any settings for a wireless device. i have a linksys wusb54g which ive seen it said has a chip of rt2500 i also have a xbox 360 wireless router. I would not mind buying a cheap usp wifi router if i can set it up to transfer movie files from my desktop to my wdtv. can somebody please point me to noob guide on how to set up and use wifi for the wdtv. thanks for the help and i have a wdtv gen2 (not a live).

When it is using supported chipset (it seems that should work) then edit the supplied sys.config file, which is in the .wd_tv.boot. (you must copy the  whole .wd_tv.boot dir to the usb pen and edit on the pendrive). Simply set wireless mode, ssid and authentication/encryption. After you should get ip address from your wireless AP (guess you have dhcp server enabled on your AP), check your AP, looking for wireless or dhcp clients, and you can see the IP address of your WDTV, and simply use a browser with that IP address (eg. http://192.168.x.x) and you can make the other configs there easier. (including lan mounts, checking logs and so on)

I spent all day trying to get apple wired ethernet/usb adapter working on B-RAD 4.1.9-6 firmware but finally gave up and tried this. It works!
Shame, as I liked the B-RAD firmware, but this seems to have everything working out of the box for me!
I'm just about to try setting up a NFS share from my NAS now. Wish me luck!

I did same way (first tried b-rad firmware), but i had very limited driver support and no webserver/etc function at all. NFS will work fine, simply configure it over the webinterface.

pH03N1x,

have you tried using moviesheets?
Have you noticed any speed improvement compared to b-rad's firmware?

Thanks for sharing your find!

Looks nice.
Tested it.

It creates a dump of messages.txt on usb. Its great advantage for troubleshooting.
For wdtv (first version) we'd a logsaver application, which never worked in G2 version. So this looks neat.

Also, they claim usb DVD drives can be connected. Need time to test that. If these 2 items work perfectly, its great news for us.

I think other custom firmware develpers, sidelined G2, as by the time G2 models came, WDTV live became the hot item in town and everyone went with that.

So,we've good firmwares and applications for WDTV ver1 and Live. :)
hope someday, optware and other pending stuffs gets worked outfor G2.

No, moviesheets are out of my focus. Only speed improvment i noticed is with the JPEG images handling, it can display 12Mpix images far-far faster than the b-rad's firmware. (my parents watched over 1200 photos, and with b-rad's firmware it took almost a half day.... with this one it took less than a hour)

I flashed my WDTV with this, and it all seems to work, but I don't have a usb/wireless to plug in. Before I go out and buy one, where can I get a list - or how can I figure out - if it's supported?  THANKS. And, yes, I did look...

You guys seem quite lonely on the Gen2 forum. I dont have a gen2, but I'm sure I could convert content to its format and filesystem. If anyone is willing to test if it works and also help with checking code if it doesnt, I'm sure we could get something worked out.

Edit the supplied sys.config file first. If you do not have proper skills for that, then you should ask someone else to do it for you.

Brilliant
Thank you for posting this
I have a USB ethernet adapter with the MCS7830 chipset (Edimax EU-4230) and after farting around with various hacks and trying to compile the driver myself (I don't do Linux so it was a bit of a lost cause) I tried this firmware.
Everything worked straight off and the web interface for control of the system is easy to use.

Well, thank you for the input.  I had actually went to ebay and bought an Realtek RTL8188SU. I couldn't get it to work, despite many tries. I then took it into work, and let a hacker co-worker try for over a month to get it to work. Neither one of us could get it going. I hate to throw it away, I hate to put it into a drawer and never use it, I can't see selling it for peanuts, and I can't see throwing more money into the project.

I was hoping that there'd be a new version of the firmware. Anyway, I guess I am not asking a question, just complaining and looking for maybe more help.

hello,

hope, someone can help me. with this software, i will get my netgear w111v2 running. the router says, the wireless adapter is connected, but i canīt get access to the wdtv or can ping it.

firewall is deactivated.

is it right, that the wireless adapter is configured correctly in the net.config file, when i get access to the router?

if i want to make some changes in the net.config file, do i have to flash this software again or will the file be read from the usb stick?

thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you, trying to figure it out.
I can access the wdtv on my pc, but I can't stream or make it somehow to show up my pc on the wdtv. sometimes for a bit it showed up one of my pc's and today my laptop(at Network Upnp), but then it freezed up on me and after reboot it dissapeard and I can't bring it back.
Padavan has a newer firmware v20, I have tried it, but I coudn't even make my wireless usb card to connect to my wireless router.

Thanks for this great tip!
Running my WDTV with current Firmware and DWA-140 WLAN adapter works 'out-of-the-box' within 10 minutes.
Now I'm searching for some english "readme" files ... Any ideas?
First question: What is the right username/passwort combination for the web frontend????

This really is a great firmware that Padavan has developed.  Easily competes with WDLXTV and beats it on many features.  The webend is slick and setup using the usr.config file is dead simple.  I've converted the readme and whatsnew files from Russian to English and added them to the zip file which is available at the following link.

http://www.mediafire.com/?6thfco5oo3gaq9d (http://www.mediafire.com/?6thfco5oo3gaq9d)

If you are currently using b-rad's WDLXTV for your WDTV G2 then this one is certainly worth a look.

PS: If you are having trouble accessing the webend then telnet into the unit and remove the "htpasswd" file from the /conf folder and reboot.

Hi,
This FW seems to be great. Thanks to PADAVAN for it.

I have installed the FW but the wireless USB adapter cant be recognized. Its a TPLINK WN722N adapter that uses an ATHEROS AR9271 chipset. I guess it is not supported by default and i dont have any idea how to find or compile a .ko external kernel module.

I just could find that its compatible with the ath9k_htc driver from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k_htc (http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k_htc)

Is there a place that i can search for it or should i have to give up with this USB adapter?

Thanks a lot for the help.
