Not much to show for in this release but the MP4 improvements alone are well worth this update.

first impressions:
12bit colors work now, my denon avr 4308 does show 12bit as input-signal.
mediafly-streams that where oos (like hak5) are now in sync.
assuming that comes with the update, not the mediafly-channel.

great news about mp4 :D
I have wdtv live only two weeks so I have a lot files in mp4 which I made from my videos recorded by Panasonic (m2ts format) and these videos I was playing only on xbox 360 before.

I was just wondering if they had fixed the revision3 problem.  Given that its a standard on Mediafly that would have been a huge problem for them if they hadn't fixed it.

I wonder if it plays the old one i saved (with the review of the wdtv live :) )

Did update to 1.03.35 and no longer got a valid output from the HDMI port. Connected to composite output (which worked fine) and rolled back to version 1.03.22. All worked fine on the HDMI output after rollback completed. Anyone else see this problem?

Redid update to 1.03.35 and verified that component output works correctly. Currently using 1.03.35 ok on my setup that requires a component connection. For the other WDTV live that uses HDMI I am staying with 1.03.22.

Hello,
at first, thanks for this forum, and sorry for my bad english.

I live in Germany.

I updated my wdtv live from 1.02.21 to 1.03.35.

My question: is the DVD-Menu feature from Beta V 1.03.22 not included in this pre-release?

I found no way to play menus  :-[

no, its still there.
the problem most likely is the missing VIDEO_TS.VOB file in the VIDEO_TS folder.

After upgrade from 1.03.22 to 1.03.35_V the HDMI 12-bit no longer works. Only 8-bit.

Hello, the VIDEO_TS.VOB is in the VIDEO_TS folder.

"Shaun the Sheep" will working, "Finding Nemo" not.
My original DVD i ripped with DVDFab6.

I try with "ifoedit" and the button "Get VTS sectors", that was operate for the stand alone DVD-Player-Copy, for harddisk not.

Play the VIDEO_TS.VOB will not start the "language selection"

maybe a problem of the Region-Code?

 :D

a new rip with DVDFab 7.0.8.2 is working!

Now i can make many rips of my childrens DVDs to play it over WDTV.

Thanks to WD for this "long overdue" (can i say it so?  ;) ) feature!

Uwe

Yeah, there clearly are some. I have to turn power on and off several times before a picture shows up.

There were some in the previous beta as well, the soft power off was still supplying something to the TV because it never said "no signal".

Now half the time when i power on the device I get "no signal". Sometimes the WD intro screen shows up and then the menu never appears instead the signal dies.

Also, regarding MediaFly, remember it is possible to add items in the WDTV Live via mCodes, but its not possible to REMOVE them again. Bit of a problem.

My experiences with this pre release:

I didn't try the previous pre release, so some of my observations may also have applied to the previous version.

My WDTV Live is not connected to a network, so I can't comment on that stuff. Also I don't use thumbnails.

But I do use it as a SD/HD video player and music player.

Good/somewhat good:
- WD finally seems to have fixed the sync bug on the optical audio output. Both 2-channel and 6-channel audio plays in sync without the need to adjust delay on my reciever.
- The dvd menu feature is really nice, but I have had trouble with dvd iso's without menu. The WDTV thinks that the first-play-video is a menu, and I cant navigate it.

Bad/really bad:
- HD video playback has become choppy. No matter which resolution/framerate option I choose, the playback is choppy. It freezes frames randomly as if it can't keep up the pace.
- The 8bit/12-bit option is buggy. Mostly I can't select 12-bit, and when I finally can, I don't know if it really goes into 12-bit mode. I can't see a difference.
- When playing music, especially FLAC files, the gap between the tracks has increased a lot compared to 1.02.xx releases.
- There is still no auto framerate, which means that you still have to fiddle with the video options every time you want to view content with different framerates. Come on WD! This is really basic.

I really don't understand why WD consistently releases firmware updates that fixes something, but ruins a bunch of other things that worked fine in previous releases.

If WD can't manage to produce a fully functioning firmware release, could they at least make a version of the first firmware, that has the menu transition disabled, for those of us that just want to use it as a player for usb disks? The factory firmware played fine, but the menu transitions sucked balls in 12-bit.

Well, for me, it's back to 1.02.21. That one actually plays the files, if you care to manually select framerate and adjust audiodelay on the reciever EVERY... DAMN... TIME... YOU... WANT... TO... SWITCH... CONTENT... TYPE...

This makes me wonder. Will they ever produce something that actually works as advertised? I had the first WDTV. That never worked (with the 24p bug and FLAC hickups and so on). This WDTV Live fares somewhat better, but it still feels like a half baked prototype with all these obvious issues. The competition from similar products is becoming more intense. Will WD rise to the challenge, or will they fail miserably? They decide, I guess.

1080p24 doesn't work in this release.
I have a device (DVDO EDGE) connected that shows exactly what the input is. Choosing 1080p24 gives me 1080p50 and jerky playback.
Downgrading to 1.02.21 gives me 1080p24 correctly. But not DVD-navigation... :(

Hello,

there is an issue driving me crazy.

I can connect to my Twonky media server through Wireless-N network (AES encryption). I am using QNAP TS-239 PRO II with latest firmware, but I also tried with a D-LINK DNS-323, same issue.

I start playback without issues, but randomly, the wireless network disconnects stopping playback. It happens only with WDTV Live, if I play the movie from the HTPC on the same wireless network, there are no disconnections.

My router is Billion 7800N with latest firmware. My network dongle is a D-Link DWA-140. Both official 1.2 and 1.3.35 pre-release firmwares.

Help!!

as I encountered HDMI issues just with this firmware release, I went back to the official one. Now all is fine again. During playback the movie started to stutter and then my Samsung LCD lost the HDMI signal from the WDTV Live.

No way for the rest of us to unofficially try these betas? I'm not sure that it would be bad for this site to avail the files for download even if WDC themselves won't.

There was a limited number of downloads available from the WD website so the new pre-release beta 1.03.35 is no longer downloadable.  How would someone like to upload it and let the rest of us know where we can access it?  That would be great!

I upgraded my wd tv and it won't turn itself on after the upgrade. Sometimes I get a wdtv intro screen and but most of the time nothing happens... The blue power on light on the unit is on, but I cant get any picture on the tv. Now I want to downgrade it, but how can i do that when I can't get the wdtv on the screen???

Hook up your composite or component cables and see if you get a pix. If you do then set the Hdmi deep color mode to 8 bit. The new beta firmware is not working in the 12 bit mode.

Thanx!
Thought i had lost the composite cable, but found it. Got pic, downgraded it, everything works fine now... :)
Think I will wait for an official release, and not beta...

Aside from the HDMI handshaking issues & choppy playback issues which others have already mentioned, there are two additional MAJOR issues/bugs that need to be fixed before a new update is released to the public.

This one is starting to become an issue as most new MKV files are being created with the new version of MKVMERGE which has the "header_removal_compression" setting turned on by DEFAULT.

BUG: "no audio if mkv made using new mkvmerge 4.1.0 or newer"
http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=6620.0 (http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=6620.0)

This one has been present for a lot of users for a LONG time. 6 months. Without any fix for this on the horizon, it's likely to cause a lot of owners to be forced to return their players before the warranty expires.

I also some issues, apart from 12-bit HDMI mot working.

Playback of photos is quite rubbish, the displayed images on the screen are extremely pixelated (very low res) compare to the Sony telly that it is attached to, that has a native DLNA function that can pull the pictures rfom the Win 7 machie across the network and display the pictures in all their HD glory as they should.

When I noticed this i decided to have a look at a DVD and the image quality is the same low res, it is pretty easy to tell with a Pixar movie, the edges become quite pixelated just like the photos are.

I am certain that in athe previous release that neither was an issue. The TV even reports that the signal coming from the WDTV is 1080p but even the menus are not as clear as what I remember.

And before anyone asks the audio/video is set to 1080p/60hz (8-bit or 12-bit HMI colour makes no difference as does AUTO)

I am happy now we have DVD menus and it does everything it says it does on the box but extremely disappointed at the picture as I see this as a massive backward step, I am now tossing up going back a firmware revision to get the quality but then lose the DVD menus.

It's a hard call.

I may be wrong, but from what I've read it seems that The WD TV Live Plus already has all the features of this latest firmware. WD released it after all us WDTV Live owners complained that we were left in the gutter because of the new hardware that was released.

Hi all,
I have a problem with my WDTV live (1.03.38). I want that audio just comes out of the optical output and not over HDMI as well. I configured in WDTV settings "digital audio without HDMI audi output" but it doens't work. I have to mute my TV. Any idea ?

Using 1.03.38V since yesterday. Screen stayed black on my Sony Bravia z4500 (via HDME) after the firmware update so I connected through composite to get a picture. I realised I had to switch from 12bit colors to 8bit to get the HDME connection working again. So, I don't know if it's my tv set or the HDME handshake or the 12bit color mode that is not properly working - I hope this is helping the wdtv crew or somebody in any way.

This is the first firmware version I've tried with DVD navigation, and it is great!  I'm stoked they added this ability to the WDTV Live. I didn't expect this feature when I bought it, so the addition is quite welcome.

My wife and I rent TV series from the library, and I've been ripping the DVDs and converting each episode to MKVs. I then return the DVD so someone else can check it out, and we slowly watch the episodes when we find the time.

The ripping usually goes smoothly, but the conversion has led to some frustration.  Now I just rip the DVD, and the playback on the WDTV works wonderfully.

.40 works great for me.  No .MKV problem with the new compressed header, networks are found faster, so I don't have to wait several minutes after a reboot.  The whole experience is much better.  I hope they keep improving the thing, but I bet they wont as they release new hardware, this unit will be obsolete, and no new firmware updates will be released.  I just hope it does not happen soon.

Yo need to edit the wdtvlive.ver file version to state it is a newer one, that is, change the VERSION line, for example, to the following:

VERSION='1.03.42_V'

By the way, a new public beta version 1.03.42 was to be released on Friday, maybe you can wait for it.

I have installed beta firmware 1.03.42... no problems so far.  As WD Live was unable to play dvd menus, I had ripped mostly all my collection as MKVs.  They play normally with the beta firmware.  But I have some dvds ripped in my shared folder, how can I play the dvd menus?  I am pressing Play over the VIDEO TS folder but I don't get the menu, just the first video playback.
Thanks.

I believe Menus will work with VOBs in a VIDEO_TS folder, as well as with .iso's.

I haven't gotten my Live yet (to add the beta to and test the menus myself), but from what I can gather I believe it might be necessary to go into the VIDEO_TS folder and press "Enter" when you're on the first VOB (i.e. VIDEO_TS.vob) or something like that.  I know it can be done, I'm just not sure of the exact steps myself, yet, because my Live won't show up until Monday, and then I'll have to flash it with the beta before I can test menus.

They have released 4 or 5 Beta releases.  Until they iron out the problems they set out to fix, they won't release a final FW.  I would think it will be soon though.  Most problems (if not all) have been fixed.

Patience is a virtue my friend.  No use releasing something that is not 100% working.  There will be more ppl Peed off at that than there are now waiting for a final release.  They are doing the right thing by not rushing a half-ass fix.

100 % true.  At least they didn't forget about us WD Live owners now that they have release a new hardware.
Besides, having customers using beta versions will help the developers discovering as much errors as possible and deliver a better product.

Is the official firmware going to address the problem of playing mkv files with compressed headers?  My device won't play them and ultimately forces me to restore the WD live to factory settings.

Since the betas do, I can't see them taking it back out when it's released as a final.

For now you can always run your faulty MKV files through MKVMerge to fix the compression header problems.  No more reseting to factory when it stops working.

Moved from 1.02.21 to 1.03.40 - after I experienced problems with sound (in DTS 2.0 output there is noise, so loud, that I can,t hear almost nothing else) and after some on/off cycles, my WDTV Live don't want to turn on - started with WD logo, and then show me "No video signal", only factory reset button helps, and then not with first time. But now mp4 files are working.  :)
Then moved to 1.03.43, problem with sound still are, but WDTV for some hours worked fine, without hung up. For time moved back to 1.02.21.

TV Philips PFL327403D with hdmi connection.

How yours experience with sound over integrate DTS 2.0 decoder?

I just downloaded the new firmware and everything seems to as before. My biggest problem was that it always played the video at 1080P 60hz if selected on HDMI (auto) instead of playing the video at original resolution it is saved in. It is still doing the same. Please help me if there is any setting for this. I want this device to play the original resolution the video is recorded on whether it is 480, 720 or 1080. The reason for this is that I have DVDO Edge and I want edge to do the video processing if the video is less than 1080P as it does the best processing. Please someone help

Confirmed; when I got home today, my WD TV Live (non-"plus") had a new firmware notification for version 1_03_49_V.  I've installed it and have some initial findings (note that I haven't played with any of the beta firmware releases, so some of this may be have been present previously).  BTW, I'm using Mezzmo Media Server running off Windows 7, and currently have things hooked up via 100 mb Ethernet through a Belkin router.

  • Dolby Digital and DTS audio material is still ~100 ms off when playing in 24 fps mode.  (At least I have a receiver that features an audio delay adjustment).

Are you talking about HDMI audio or SPDIF?

If you're talking HDMI, then yes, it would count as a bug... the HDMI signal is supposed contain the proper delay to keep audio and video synced up.

But if you're talking Optical/Toslink, then this is just a known limitation of SPDIF (and is why the receivers have adjustable delay to begin with).

I'm talking about HDMI audio.

Meanwhile, I found that navigating the menus is only slower in 24 fps mode.  60 fps mode is very fast.

I don't think this is quite true. an ISO is not mandatory to get the dvd menu
When I open the file VIDEO_TS.VOB in the VIDEO_TS folder. I will get the DVD menu

Sorry Latis.  You're right.  What I meant to say it that is has to come from a true DVD, not something build using such software as magicISO or such software.  BTW the DVD menu also works with ISOs made using ConvertXtoDVD and/or the VideoTS that it creates.

The firmware seems okay, but I'm still having problems with the unit not turning on. If I leave the unit turned off for lets say a day, it will not turn on via the remote. I have to physically disconnect the power cord, and then it will reboot and work as normal. I had the same problem with the beta firmwares. Am I alone in this? I may have to downgrade back to the last official release (which worked fine). :/

It still hasn't prompted me for an upgrade.  Even when I force the unit to check for an update it says I have the latest.  In a way it great since I really don't want it.... :)

I am also having exactly the same problem, if I switch it off and immediately on, no  problem, but after one day or so, no way to switch it on, need to disconnect the power cord. I think this is a bug.

Try to set the unit the default (Restore Default) in the settings menu. It seems to have fixed the boot problem.

WHS Network Problems...
After upgrading to the new firmware, I have problems to connect to my Windows Home Server Shares. It takes a long time to connect.

After upgrading the network shares work randomly. Sometimes the connection cannot be made to my network nas. Sometimes wdtv live makes a connection but says cryptically "there's no media in the current folder". If I clear all login info I might be able to connect and even browse some folders but only very rarely am I able to select an actual video file before the whole thing freezes. Is there any way to downgrade to the earlier version? That worked more solidly except an occasional freeze every now and then.
