Thanks scott :) Can I just say I have been using the beta release since it came available as the windows 7 support for me has saved me a lot of grief... So much so that I was even putting up with the slow .mkv starts.... Now this pre-release is out im over the moon :) so thanks.

I know you guys were put behind by the bricking issue so I hope my fellow WDTV owners can be a bit patient for you guys to get back on track... the beta release and now this pre-release is great for moral.... Looking forward to the next official release so all the great developers on this site will base their mods and customwares on that.

Cheers and thanks  ;D

dvd navigation would be really nice :-)
+ Hope for a b-rad-version of this soon since it may fix my CRT-overlay problem (cut-off videos on left/right side)

Yeah, DVD-navigation would by nice. However, it's not working (yet) in this pre-release (not for iso's and BDVM-folders).
Installation went smooth. I didn't try a lot of things, because I had to go to work. But everything still seems to work :)

BTW: thnx Scott for the new version. I hope it will be official very soon, so B-Rad will include this in his version :D.

Well mkv start is back to a few seconds.

You can indeed move the subs, but it doesn't seem to remember where you left them. (And I can't help feel its a waste of few buttons to use them for this)

And it still doesn't correctly play the mp4s from revision3s podcasts (http://revision3.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31691&page=2 (http://revision3.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31691&page=2)) - the image plays at 3-4 times normal speed, whilst the sound plays at normal speed.

Please, change the font subtitles!

Why? I like them - though the bug of a transparent border is still there. But now you can change the font size to huge (for soft subtitles - guess this means we are going to have to rip all DVDs to get better resolution!)

But if its an option I wouldn't mind.

Hello, I don't think this was mentioned anywhere:

If you are browsing a share you can press Options and change the browsing mode. Ie, change from listview to thumbnails etc.

This is nice.

Though currently you can't select the mode you are in.

I would like to see that added.

Why? Because I would use this feature to refresh the directory to changes made (files added or removed) - at the moment i would have to change to a mode i don't want and back to my mode of choice.

But its a nice addition, I always thought the option button should do something when you were browsing files :)

Thanks for the new pre-release. At last we have a choice for the subtitle position. By the way I noticed that, AC3 audio sync better than older firmware. It is not perfect, but much better. However I can played some WMV/WMV HD files before, but in this firmware I can't open any WMV files. Meanwhile we can play FLV videos through Youtube ability, if so why flv filetypes are not supported?

Guy, if it helps any, it seems to be a corruption of the files within the .wd_tv folder.
The movie folder that WDTV refuses to load a jpg from can not be deleted from within the WDTV file management window.
I removed the drive from the WDTV and connected it to my XP computer. XP also refuses to remove the (movie) folder. The .wd_tv folder is reported by Windows as corrupt.
I'm having to copy-off ALL of the files/movies off of the USB hard drive because I am unable to delete the .wd_tv folder to force a refresh.

Can you post the media info for a few of these WMVs that won't play? What happens when you try to play them? Does the WDTV give you the unsupported content message?

Good JOB!!!
1. The option the change the name of the WORKGROUP is great!
2. One of my requirements was implemented - the HDCD encoded flac files now there are output corectly (as it should) - my receiver finally accept the PCM send over optical as HDCD and plays them accordingly. One great improvement for quality sound!

I have tested some other files and I foud out that files with the sampling frequency higher than 44.1kHz are down-sampled to 44.1kHz. Come on! I cannot win?
Can you send the files as there are encoded via the optical SPDIF (and HDMI probably is tha same)? Pretty please???
Also the flac 5.1 is not supported. Yet... I hope?

Ok, this is spooky and depressing...

I tried to play an mpeg which worked before, but now there is no sound only picture. Then i tried an mp4 which worked before, but there is no sound only picture. Then i try an avi which worked before and the sound pops in after a second or two.

Then i return to the mpeg/mp4 and now they play stuttery sound - but stuttery i mean there is about 0.5 seconds of silence, followed by 0.5 seconds of sound.

I try resetting to default - no change.
I try turning it off for a bit and on again - no change.

I now go back to the last normal firmware... and its the same!

Did the device suddenly fry or what the heck happened?

My WUSB600N V2 stopped working with this release and there is no wireless configuration interface anymore.
Though never officially supported by WD, this device worked from the beginning. I'll go back to the last official final.

UPDATE

a reset to factory defaults and a power cycle later the issues with the wusb600n v2 were gone.

In this prerelease have included support for new wireless devices namely the TP-LINK TL-WN821N (Atheros chipset) now works perfectly, which is not done with previous FW. This model is a good thing is that he's cheap (cost me 19 ) and has a maximum transfer of 300Mbps.

Now there is the issue of transfer of files that have a high bitrate, I tried some and the picture freezes or the sound is lost, do not know if NFS data transfer will be better.

I tried to hanewin, but does not work.

Someone can help me?

I found a bug in copying files: the total amount of files isn't displayed correctly.  The total stops counting when it starts copying a large file and continuous counting after the large file is copied, then stops again when an other large file is reached and so on.
It happens when copying and moving files. Didn't try deleting or so...

Grtz,

Frank

Right, regarding the stuttery sound - after having the device hard switched off for a while, then playing and avi for an hour (vaguely assuming it might clear a buffer or something) all files once again played fine.

I have never seen this behavior before, and I tried to see if i could recreate it - which didn't work.

And the only thing I had been doing was testing the TwonkyBeam plugin (DNLA) - so i don't know if there is a bug in the DNLA routines which could cause this.

Sometimes the device does weird things (like when i press enter on an mp3 and get the message "folder is empty" - huh?)

Hi,

I am an IT guy and try to access media files on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Share. I tried to debug and work around the many problems wdtv live seems to have in this environment.

As I see that WD is actively working on the networking stuff I think it makes sense to post the bugs I could identify so far, hoping that it helps WD to make it more stable.

Beware: this is a lot of problems!

1)On switching on, the device is hangign for exactly 300 sec. while doing mdns discovery on the network. No menu functioning, standby switch on remote does not work. I have to pull the power.
I can reproduce this in the following cases:
power on the unit with network cable plugged in (which means any time I want to use it).
power on unit without network, unit works and hangs as soon as the cable is plugged in.
after waiting 5 minutes I can continue.
(this was already a bug in 1.02.14, it works ok in 1.01.17)

2) I configure the workgroup to the name of my domain: dom. The domain name is not used on logon to a share, but it still uses "workgroup" the domain name.
As a windows user I would expect it to use a local account in this case instead of a wrong domain name.
connect to network share, account data entered:
account: mediauser
password a4

Account For Which Logon Failed:
   Security ID:      NULL SID
   Account Name:      mediauser
   Account Domain:      WORKGROUP

3) if using the fields for account and password, there is an error if the password ends with /. Length of the password does not seem to matter.
example:
account: dom\mediauser
password: a4/
the device does not try to log on but searches for a netbios name "dom\mediauser    0x20", which does not exist

if the password is a4, it logs on with
domain: dom
account: mediauser
password a4

4) if logging on with the account data.
example:
data entered:
account: dom\mediauser
password a4
is now successfully logging on
New Logon:
   Security ID:      DOM\mediauser
   Account Name:      mediauser
   Account Domain:      DOM

then a second logon (to the share?) is done which fails again. The domain is missing.
Account For Which Logon Failed:
   Security ID:      NULL SID
   Account Name:      dom\mediauser
   Account Domain:

Failure Information:
Failure Reason:      Unknown user name or bad password.
   Status:         0xc000006d
   Sub Status:      0xc0000064

Result on wdtvlive: there is no media in the current folder

I got this environment to work and to play files in 1.01.17 with a few workarounds, but no chance for this prerelease. On the other hand 1.01.17 was useless for me because of the audio not in sync via spdif out.

I moved back the external HDD to the PC (Win7 x64) and I found out that the shared folders are working better - in mkv files I can FFD, REW with no problems, I can play higher bitrate files... it is good.

As with the other pre-releases, here is an alternative download option for those wanting to try this out.  It is a torrent and seeding after download IS mandatory [obviously I cannot FORCE you to help share but if you HIT & RUN... a)  I'll know it AND b) your IP goes into my ASSHATS file, which means you cannot download anything else I share via torrent, EVER!].  For those active in the torrent community, I'd appreciate you leaving comments on the host page (KickAssTorrents) so others will know the download is solid and worth their time to download.  Thanks to all!

After updating to 1.02.19, I have problems with accessing my windows home server running twonky media server 5.1.2

The TM server is visible in the WD Live but access to the content is not possible.

And also, the standard network shares of the WHS are not visible in 1.02.19 - as they were'nt also in 1.01.24 (but there, they appear after some minutes)

So, I returned to 1.01.24

Not sure if it's a bug but after installing this pre-release my MKV files restart if i swap audio channels during playback.

This never used to happen in previous firmware.

If a share is dismounted - it is still listed on the Lives screen.

Please response to my request.

Give it a try some people here have found advantages.

Also the more people that test the beta and give there feedback to WD the better the full released Firmware will be.

I've found one small bug in the mkv goes back to the beginning if I switch audio tracks but it's not a big deal. plus you can always roll back to the previous release.

I haven't had a chance to play with it much but i'm interested in the reports of the lip sync, through digital optical out, being better in this release. I watched one film yesterday (Jumper) where the sync was good (AC3 passthrough encoded in handbrake). It slipped off at one point but I paused and played again which seemed to fix it.

Has anyone else had a chance to look at this?

What made that mkv? is it MakeMKV? I've noticed a strong incompatiblity by the mkvs it makes - usually running them through mkvmerge gui fixes it.

I'll have to test the audio swapping on MKVs.  I use MakeMKV as well.

This pre-release did fix a problem I had with the current production release firmware playing VOBs.  They would not play via a media server or network shares.  They play fine with 1.02.19.

I normally use MTR to rip, then encode down with Handbrake. I do use MakeMKV as well though, Mostly for tv series or tricky protection that MTR can't handle...

I've never had any issues with MakeMKV compatibility with the WDTV live though.

Good to see that some firmware's are being released (although still beta).
I've installed this latest beta and was testing the added feature "play to".
Unfortunatelly it doesn't work for me. After selecting a mp3 and selecting 'play to WDTVLIVE' the playto screen of Win7 appears.
After pressing play I see the waiting icon but nothing happens.
I've already tried turning off the firewall and making a direct lan connection between laptop and WD. No difference.

One thing else I noticed was in the explorer. Under network>media devices the WD can be seen but it keeps disappearing and appearing.
What is going on, why doesn't it work. Who can help...

Give it a try!  I've had none of these problems mentioned.  Only real problem is the box freezes and locks up while browsing files.  The instability seems to be triggered when you switch views on the fly once or twice, and in thumbnail view.

I'm glad to see more confidence put on preview mode since I've always liked using it but found it a little bit unstable.  Always been able to play movies in their entirety - with all firmwares - but general stability of the box has been questionable since launch.

I use the network almost exclusively for my media so I can't speak to local drive problems.

Good luck!

Thanks to Jimble and wiibox for your kind advise.

I installed this upgrade and tried few video files from shared network.  Formates include MKV, M4, AVI, Mts etc and did not see any issue with video or sound quality.  The old problem of no sound on certain audio formates through HDMI and Digital setup is still there.  If I change to Stereo from Digital (audio/video setup) then I get sound but my Onkyo 7,1 receiver will not recognize 5.1 channels.  If I keep Digital, receiver will recognize 5.1 but no sound.  This was happening in all versions and only in certain audio formates.

Thanks

I've never had any issues with MakeMKV compatibility with the WDTV live though.

That's why I'm thinking it might be a bug in makemkv rather than the live, since some people don't have any problems with the mkvs generated, and some of us do.

It wouldn't recognise 5.1 in stereo mode, as it only outputs stereo sound (2 cahnnels). I'm unsure why you would get audio from your AV reciever when set to digital though. How is your WDTV connected to your AV Reciever, is it via Optical out or HDMI?

Thanks for reading my earlier post.

Everything is connected with HDMI.  WDTV to Onkyo Receiver and receiver to TV.  As mentioned earlier for certtain audio format no audio if digital in audio/video setup and 2 channel sound if Stereo.  I tried all possible setup in receiver as well.  Receiver is smart enough and usuaaly everything is Auto with manual option.  This no audio issue was there for all FWs

What audio formats do this for you?  I know that Live will do what you describe with multichannel AAC.  Seems Live is either passing multichannel pcm to my amp, which it doesn't recognize, or it's passing nothing at all to my amp.  As you say, in 'stereo' mode, Live will down-sample and output PCM stereo.  Obviously, very inconvenient to be switching back and forth.

I was wondering if maybe AAC is now being decoded by newer receivers, and/or newer equipment than mine, and it's the reason multichannel AAC behaves like DD and DTS.  I suspect not, though.

The only things i can suggest is make sure you use windows media player 12 to set up  library it is also the only way to play to files on networked drives.

In windows 7 media player ---click on stream ---> tick allow remote control of my player and tick automatically allow devices to play my media

In Control Panel -->>Network And Internet -->Network and Sharing Center -->Advanced sharing setting

Turn on public  folder sharing, Turn on media streaming, Turn off password protected sharing

Also check Control Panel --> Network and internet ---> Network and sharing center   you are on home network, not public

Control Panel --> System and Security --> System Workgroup is called 'workgroup'

In YouTube, when I press arrow keys, multiple key-presses are sent - like in a list (Favorites or Playlist or Relevant Videos or Search Results), if I press down navigation button on remote once, three or four items are skipped as if I pressed the button three or four times.  It happens slow sometimes that I can see it skip one-by-one.  This also happened with 1.2.14.  Anybody else having this issue ?  I've reset to factory defaults and it doesn't help.

Am I right in making a statement that:
there are no major issues with this pre-release so we could expect final version with some NEW FEATURES very soon?

Yes, there is more than 1 question here.

(1) Are there any major issues with this pre-release?
(2) Can we expect that issues if any will be resolved without any more beta?
(3) Are we expecting any NEW FEATURES in next FW?
(4) When can we expect next final version?

Thanks for reading.

Indeed, the WDTV Live is passing the AAC 5.1 undecoded. And there are just a few receivers that can decode that signal (my Denon AVR3805 can) therefore that format is garbage.
It should either avoided completelly or, if WD is nice with ours, it should be transcoded in real time to a normal surround format - like DolbyDigital or DTS. Sure, it will involve some extra licensing fees, so I don't know how that will play.
Creative is charging less than 5$ for the supplementary DDL/DTS connect software, so I guess the fees are not that huge.

This 'play on' is not yet fully reliable cause when I checked again a day later (without changing a thing) I could successfully stream content to the WD. Go figure.

One last thing I came across and could be a usefull tip for others: When trying "Play to" for the first time the Play-to-window only showed for a short moment. This behaviour is seen when you set a custom DPI setting in your display settings of Windows7. Choosing a defaull setting fixes it.

Hi everybody, here is my input about the Pre-release 1.02.19 firmware

I have my WDTV live since it came out on the market and so far this pre-release is the best firmware I had on my WDTV live. At some point at was going to sell it on ebay because it wasn't working probably. Not just for me but for my friend who got one too.

I was having problem with the Network (SMB share with Windows 7) All my share was done perfectly, every other device was able to access my share on my network. I never had problem playing offline file (MKV, AVI...)

The biggest issue was that WIRED or WIRELESS wasn't able keep a connection while wathing a movie more than 10 minutes.
after that I had to either reboot the pc or unplug the router to get back the SMB share.

Now with the Pre-release the issue is not totally fixed but a lot more reliable.
with wireless I have a hard time to get the SMB share(seem to be worst than before)
but with wired I don't loose the connection anymore (it happened once but that acceptable).
the only problem (which I'm fine with it) is that when I turn one the WDTV it take at least 5 to 10 minutes for the SMB share to show up. The Media Server is available right away. I just have to open the device ahead before watching the movie.

I'm still planning to look for another device (not WDTV LIVE) for daily watching but I hope WDTV will fix completelly this problem.

Firmware works fine for me so far (have it installed since it came out). However, its losing/forgetting the network share login and password data a lot. If you don't have the setting enabled to enter it manually, i wouldn't be able to access my shares in a lot of cases. Now, i merely have to reenter the login and password.

The font used in subtitle very bad in the presentation of the Arabic language and English

Please inform the support

Thank you very very very much  :)
