Post by: jayallan on January 01, 2009, 10:54:14 PM
There is a flash update for the WDTV Media Player.  We recommend you update immediately !

It is here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/

Note: If you already have updated to 1.01.01 this new update .02 is not needed.

From Official site:

What's New?

    * Even more video file formats supported
    * Improved subtitle support. Additional advanced features added
    * Enhanced Matroska (MKV) support for chapters and subtitles
    * Enhanced media playback and navigation
    * Improved power management

And there's more. See our firmware release notes for all the details.

How to Install the Product Update:

   1. Open the firmware update .ZIP file and extract the two files (.BIN and .VER) to a
      USB drive's main directory
   2. Turn the WD TV on and connect your USB drive
   3. Use the remote control to select SETTINGS from the home screen
   4. Highlight the firmware upgrade icon, and press ENTER on the remote
   5. You will be prompted to perform the firmware upgrade. Select OK and press ENTER.
      This will restart the system
   6. After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware upgrade mode
   7. Once the update process is completed, the HD media player will restart again

Hi,

Is there a way to install the new firmware again. It looks like the WDTV checks the version.

with regards,

Nico

Yes, I believe you can rename it a higher number and it will install.  IE 1.20.00

Then once it is installed it will retain its correct number so you can install a later update no problem.

I cant seem to find the "firmware upgrade icon" in the settings. Can anyone tell me exactly where it is?

I believe the icon only appears when you have a valid .bin and .ver on a thumb drive attached to the unit.
I do not recommend using a hard drive to do your update as it can take hours instead of a few minutes.
This problem is fixed with the update BTW.

Are there any news on the release date of the new firmware update? Some rumors said February - others beginning of March. Now we're in midmonth and still no light at the end of the tunnel...

The only information I have is from Scott at WD who says they are beta testing
the new firmware internally and will be releasing it shortly.
