I don't get a firmware upgrade icon on my wd hd live.  I have tried unplugginh thenetwork cable and powering it of/on plus resetting to factory defaults.

The firmware version on my WD HD live 1.01.00 and a firmware upgrade via the internet says i am up to date.

Are the WDTV LIVE AND THE WDTV HD  LIVE NOT THE SAME?

Any suggestions?

That's not the official way!   That's the Homebrew way ;)   Which I heartily recommend BTW!

I got it. Had to have the files extracted to the root of the usb device and power off and back on. WD support says if it sees the files then the icon will appear.

I upgraded my unit through the download option and only had one hick-up.  When the upgrade was finished and the unit rebooted it locked-up and went to a black screen.  Had to unplug to reset and everything was fine.  Just an FYI if yours does the same thing don't panic and think you bricked it, just power cycle the unit.

The exact same thing happened to me, except that my firmware was loaded off of a usb key. And yes, I had about 10 minutes where I wouldn't touch it and instead just gulped hard and wiped sweat from my brow.

It's all good now, though.

I have B-Rads homebrew firmware.  Can I simply overwrite with a new official firmware and then add the corresponding homebrew again??

I downloaded the zip file for the update, I just wanted to make sure that if I save them to the "root" of a portable hard drive aka my 3TB or 2TB My Book Essential, would the media player see it or do I actually have to go buy a thumb drive for it to work? thank you

You can give it a shot,  It won't hurt anything but IMO you should by a thumb drive about 2 gig.  Much better.
