Title: Root.bins of WDTV FW 1.03.x
Post by: dexter on October 24, 2009, 07:36:01 AM
I have updated the 1.03.01 pre-release for use with ext3-boot 0.9.2 firmware...
should include all custom updates from 1.02.10 , but with fixed show of IP address in welcome info and about window from original 0.9.2 ext3-boot.

Only found OsdMod 0.5 incompatible here, rest seems to work fine..
problems seems to be new changes in Osd, so it OsdMod needs an update to work.

v1.03.01 - obsolete (http://rapidshare.com/files/297321148/root.bin.1.03.01.zip)

v1.03.01 fix - updated version (http://rapidshare.com/files/297452463/root.bin.1.03.10fix.ZIP)
 - addded view enhancement (missing from older release) as suggested by Mike2k8 , thanks.
 - added danish language support (only works on standard OSD) (see enclosed readme.txt for info)
 - included rezmus fix for more fontsizes and the polish language add.

Great job, dexter. :)

I have noticed that list view enhancements of original ext3-boot (wider list showing more characters in a line), as well as artwork, are not included in this release. (It looks like the original WD firmware)
For the people who want to keep the look of ext3-boot 0.9.2, you can try to follow these steps.
I'm, assuming that you have installed a working (i.e. you have network access) Zorander's ext3-boot 0.9.2 with updated 1.02.08 root.bin (rezmus).

Plug your usb root device in your PC. Open the drive in explorer, and rename the original root.bin to root.bin.old
Copy the dexter updated root.bin to the drive.

Extract the device and connect it to your wdtv (with the power plug disconnected).
Connect the power plug.

When the boot process is finished (you should be able to see 1.03.01 in the about screen), access to the device with telnet, and execute the following commands:

Code: [Select]
mkdir /tmp/rootbinold
mount -t cramfs -o loop /boot/root.bin.old /tmp/rootbinold
cd /tmp/rootbinold
cd /osd
cp inc_list_browse.xml /osd
cd /image
cp browser_list_btn.long.png /osd/image
cp browser_list_line.png /osd/image
cp welcome_background_bg.jpg /osd/image
cp welcome_logo.png /osd/image

Press the power button on the remote twice to power off and on, and you are done. (You should see the modified background, and in list view you will see longer text lines.)

Please, see this thread (http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=816.0)
It seems that in the latest ext3-boot by zorander (1.02.07), that image was missing. It was in 1.02.08 updated root.bin by Rezmus, you can also pick one of the two versions posted in that thread.

The image is to highlight the selection in the list view. Since the list is now wider than in the official firmware, the highlight needs to be bigger to cover all the line. If the image is missing, it's difficult to see what it's selected (only the font is a bit higher bigger).

Thanks again for updating this :)

Another thing I noticed is that (at least with your first version) the "reboot" command won't work over telnet, as it did with Zorander's and Rezmus' versions. It would be nice to have this capability back. But even without it, I really appreciate your making this root.bin. With 1.03 all of the music player functions now work as they are supposed to. I spent a lot of time trying to make a root.bin with 1.02.11, but didn't succeed. So I'm glad you stepped up. My WDTV finally does everything I expect it to!

One more thing.
I have discover that my procedure is not good. I have discovered that for some reason (which I don't know, by the way) it is not persistent (if you unplug the device, the modifications are lost).

I have modified it slightly, and this one seems to work well.

Assuming that you have installed a working (i.e. you have network access) Zorander's ext3-boot 0.9.2 with updated 1.02.08 root.bin (rezmus).
Plug your usb root device in your PC.
Rename the dexter updated root.bin to root.bin.new, and copy it to the drive (do not overwrite the existing root.bin).

Extract the device and connect it to your wdtv (with the power plug disconnected).
Connect the power plug.

When the boot process is finished (you still have your old ext3-boot version, nothing has changed at this point), access to the device with telnet, and execute the following commands (make sure the wdtv is switched off with the remote at this point):

Code: [Select]
mkdir /tmp/t1
mount -t cramfs -o loop /boot/root.bin.new /tmp/t1
cd /osd
cp inc_list_browse.xml /tmp/t1/osd
cd image
cp browser_list_btn.long.png /tmp/t1/osd/image
cp browser_list_line.png /tmp/t1/osd/image
cp welcome_background_bg.jpg /tmp/t1/osd/image
cp welcome_logo.png /tmp/t1/osd/image
umount /tmp/t1
cd /tmp
rm -r t1

Unplug the wdtv. Take the usb device and connect to the PC
Rename root.bin to root.bin.old
Rename root.bin.new to root.bin
Extract the usb device, connect to the wdtv and plug it to the mains.

Of course, this is not necessary anymore, since dexter is updating his root.bin, but maybe someone find it useful in the future, who knows?
By the way, if someone figures out why the first procedure doesn´t resist a hard reboot, please comment it , I'd like to know.

Suggest you try again later. If you are patient, sooner or later it should be available for free download. Rapidshare may be busier around this time (and day of the week) than it will be later.

I think that the topic of that thread is unrelated. Those root.bins are not ext3-boot updated to the latest official firmwares, like this one. Those are root.bin replacements intended to test official firmwares or wdlxtv firmwares in a ext3-boot enviroment.

That being said, I miss a pinned thread for the ext3-boot root.bin updates, like the one for wdlxtv releases.

I have made an automated update of new builds on my machine, so it will be much easier to migrate to new updates, if these patches do not needs updates.

anyways i will try and keep this updated, as much as possible..
Was wondering to look into the wdtvlive builds, but im waiting for the patched cramfsck to open the firmware.. i looked at the cramfsck code, but didnt find a solution yet.

its missing because all of these osd enhancements were made for wdlxtv and it was missed when copied.

Maybe a bit off topic but I tried the WDTVLX, like it but have some problem. My hub is not supported even with the 07 version of this firmware.
Now I would like to know if it is possible with this dexter version of zoranders ext-3 to have the addons like appletrailers on my NTFS formated HDD. Because if this would e working, which is not for WDTVLX, I would not need the usb hub.

Title: Re: Root.bins of WDTV FW 1.03.x
Post by: dexter on October 29, 2009, 03:13:40 PM
i use the latest appletrailerfs beta and it works. but as its a beta, it seems to have problems showing the "skin" with full screen pictures when entering it.
but movies are still playing fine, but it seems the fullscreen menu+skin is only enabled at first startup.

OsdMod does not support latest 1.03.10 skins seems WDTV changed a little in this. maybe reason for appletrainer to fail on second startup?

Webserver addon works, but seems to disable .iso playback functions.

so yes, in general addons and mods should work fine, if made for the WDTV update.

Doesn't work for me either.  My rt73 wi-fi dongle couldn't connect with 1.03 root.bin (changed only one file - root.bin, with previous ver. 1.02.07 works fine). I'm using wireless-mod-rt.app.bin 1.2.4. Seems like the config files wasn't read by wireless-mod-rt.app (dongle's led is flashing in specific way).

Loaded this new version. I'm facing an issue using SSH Telnet. I'm requested for user (type root)and password (leave empyt).
In previous version this work but now it doesn't work. I receive the message: Access Denied
Just SSH is affected, standard Telnet and FTP work using user root and password empty as login credential.

Do you have the same issue? Someone know the right root password?

the parameter in sshd_config for allowing emptry root password is:  PermitEmptyPasswords

# To enable empty passwords, change to yes (NOT RECOMMENDED)
PermitEmptyPasswords no

try update the config, it might solve it.

This works great, I wish there would be a explanation on how to install it for the newbs like me out there but I found it.
Download the old ext3-boot firmware, and change the root.bin in the old one for the root.bin that is in the beginning of this thread.

I have a question, can I access the drive connected to WDTV, with the root.bin file? I have wireless and nfs working, meaning I can stream movies from my computer to WD, but I want  to be able to access the drive connected to WD so that I can change the root.bin settings, is this even possible, maybe over telnet? And I would like the option to movie files from my computer to the drive connected to WD. Is there also a FTP server in this edition of root.bin? How can I access it?

You can both telnet and ftp using this firmware. Host name is the IP address (e.g. 192.168.nn.nnn) assigned to your WDTV. Login ID is root. Password is blank. You will be able to edit/replace the configuration files (e.g. net.mounts, net.config).

Thank you worked like a charm, I have two new questions, when I have mounted a nfs share called "Dator" I can see this in two places, under USB2 and next to the name of my attacked storage device, and also when I open the attached storage device I can see the mounted NFS share, how come it is in both places, with WDLXTV it was only next to the attacked storage device. Also, each time I choose the "reboot -f" command from telnet, the WD can not boot up, it just shows the WD logo and does not respod to remote control commands, telnet in is not an option either... The only option I have is to reinstall it again. This also happens when I turn off the WD with the remote and disconnect the usb stick, I can not boot up the WD with the usb stick again, it just says no attacked storage device =/

Nvm all of this, apparently root.bin took alot longer time to boot then I thought. So I just had to wait for it to boot up. After a reboot -f command from telnet the NFS folder inside the usb-stick disappeared aswell, so now  everything is just perfect. Thanks for all the help guys!

Gen2 is WDTV 2-nd generation device (WDBABG) on SMP8655. Same as WD TV Live except networking.
Last official firmware for gen2 devices is 1.01.77 (dated 12/2009).

b-rad's wdxltv goes only for Gen1 and Live devices...

...actually the goal is to get UDF (ext.DVD-ROM) support to gen-2 :)

I have been using this for a while and it works great, I am now curious if there is an easy way to add USB hub support and / or optical drive support.

Thanks.

Howdy all.  Is this the latest root.bin out there for Zorander's ext3-boot 0.9.2 firmware?  I haven't upgraded for a long time.  Thanks.  Or have people pretty much moved on to b-rad's firmware for the Gen 1?

Good morning to you all.

I would like to know if it's possible to make de WDBABF0000NBK, to autoplay any media inserted.  For example: the WDBABF0000NBK has a USB PEN with a moovie and when i turn on the POWER it will search automaticly for media contents and starts to play without remote control or any other action.

Thanks in advance for any help possible.

My best regards;
A.Rocha ... from Portugal

This root.bin is quite old now.  There is a new one based on 1.05.04 which you can download via the wiki
http://wiki.wdlxtv.com/Main_Page#Download
If you really want the older 1.03.*, it is also there for download.

Note a beta version of 1.05.04 is in progress with WDTVExt 0.5.1.5 which will give you the very best of both worlds, WDTVExt plugins on the latest stable firmware release.  (for the live only)

Thank you for your quick response, however WDLXTV is not the answer. I am currently using ext3-boot-0.9.2 with an extracted root.bin based on the 1.02.10 firmware for the Gen1 WDTV. I am looking for the fixed root.bin based on the 1.03.01 firmware like the OP released.

Does anyone have a copy of the 1.03.01.fix.zip file released by the OP?

I guess I miss-understood...sorry.  However, if it is the fix you are after the link is still valid.  It is a Rapidshare link usable by anyone, even if you don't have a rapidshare account.

Well, there is my problem. When I click on the link, a download does not automatically start and the link to start the download is hardly intuitive. The link is in the middle of what looks like an ad to buy RapidPro. I am so attuned to ignoring ads that I did not hover my mouse over the download button to view the underlying link. Hey, I learned something today!

Thanks RavRob.

to use this root.bin, what i must to have in the wdtv ?
an original firmware 1.03.x ? or a ext3-boot cfw ?

if the answer is ext3-boot, must i install before the ofw 1.02.08 ?

i ask all this because i have the unit flashed with the lastest wdlxtv firmware.

So then what i must to perform to test this root.bin ?

thx in advance

If you are already flashed with the home brew you should be good to go.  Just put the root.bin on a usb stick and place in the WDTV and reboot.  Should work.

Note I don't have one of these and don't use the root.bin but it is the normal way to use such a bin.

it is the last one made by dexter - "root.bin.1.03.10fix", indeed the updated version, 1.03.10 is the updated one, he has a typo in the original post naming them "1.03.01" and "1.03.01 fix"

thx a lot for all Rev Drew :)

not many ppl keep actually active witht he amazing Gen1 !

I am working actually with the 'webservers-addons'. The original version from Red-indian has tons of bugs and it is very slow browing with the webcontrol. I am trying to see if i can remake certain things.

PD exist a way to determine via console, what song or movie it is playing the device ?
