Title: Welcome to the WDTV FORUM
Post by: jayallan on January 01, 2009, 10:45:37 PM
I have created this forum to discuss the wonderful new media player from Western Digital.   This is sort of a cross over device that a lot of people are buying, but they don't really understand how to use.   We will remedy that!  The WDTV is an inexpensive media player that has a wealth of features, many of which are complicated to use when you don't understand the underlying terminology.  We will go into all the different media on this site.  Enjoy!

And, don't be afraid to ask questions!  :)

Thanks for putting this thing together.  After researching popcorn hour and such, there doesn't seem to be anything like the wdtv for $99

Just wanted to add my thanks for putting this forum together.

Just got my WDTV today, mainly because I was looking for a way of ripping my CD collection to a digital format that didn't mean having to have a laptop on all the time... and without breaking the bank in the process.

So far, just a couple of hours into it, seems to have been a good choice.

Look forward to sharing some experiences and tips with the rest of ya!

Andy

Hi,
I'm new around here as well, coming from the AVS forum. Will post later a link with a map from google maps that shows where are WDTV users in the world.
List is here > http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16169824#post16169824
Do reply if you are from somewhere not listed there.

Thank you all!  :)

Awesome Site! I recommend this thing to everyone I talk to...everywhere! Now its great to have a home forum to talk about how great this unit is. When this baby came out I ran out and bought one...as soon as they restocked them! These things seem to fly off the shelf. I dare say WD has one huge mega hit on their hands. All the people I know who have one are very happy with them. I have only seen one very bad review and I am pretty sure who ever wrote it must work for popcorn hour or some other competitor. The review was ridiculously bad. Said it was cheap, would not play any vids correctly and dozens of other flase claims. Must have them really worried! lol

I now have littel use for cable TV anymore. I have about 4000 movies and TV shows on 2TB of drive space, yeah, I am already bragging! I am very proud of my collection I have put together. I am sure there are others here who are too. I am really getting my Hi Def collection beefed up now. Mostly 720p though. I have a few 1080p but for me 720p is well enough. Anyways, I have rambled on about myself and bragged enough to make people hate me already but I am looking forward to talking to all the other movie buffs who enjoy their WD Media Center.

One more thing. The new Thumbnail feature. I know many, many, many people will be happy to have that! I myself have little use for it because I like to keep my unit set to the simple list mode. Makes it much faster to cycle through my collection. Time after time I saw people requesting this one feature over and over. Its good to know WD is paying close attention to the people. This is how to make a wonderful product. Keep listening to the customers and this unit will not be beat.

The forum is great it gives the WDTV definitly an additional value, its strange that the WD guys dont advertise on this site and the two firmware sites to support their customers adn "developers" to gain more sale.

Hi , Im new to this forum.
I must say that I found a lot of interesting and useful things in it.
Im using WDTV media player from december mostly to play back HDV video with outstanding results. In fact I replaced a dedicated PC (U$S900 value) in my Video Room, with a significant improvement of performance and quality. I love this product.
I have it connected to an  HD projector in a dedicated room.
Again : Thanks for the idea of forming this forum.

Hello, everybody. I am Greg from the Detroit area, and I just got my WDTV last week. Quite simply, I love it. Western Digital is first to market with a HTPC killer, and having bought this thing, I'm really glad that I didn't go through the expense and trouble of putting together a home theatre PC.

I get the impression that I use the device a little bit differently from a lot of folks here, in that I prefer to use a simple flash drive instead of a dedicated USB hard drive to store my files. Anime files-- specifically 720p MKV files-- are my poison. I support the domestic American companies by buying licensed DVDs on these shores, and enjoy the new stuff as it comes off of Japanese TV via the fansubbing groups. Even on a simple budget Olevia 37" TV (which is actually "768p" rather than 720/1080p), files look great. (I'll buy a huge Samsung LED TV when I'm independently wealthy.)

Now that I have this thing, I want Hollywood to catch up and offer us the opportunity to buy DRM-free 720/768/1080p movies and TV shows in high-bitrate MKV format.

Hi Guys!

I am from Romania and i wanna thank you for letting me join this group. Also i wanna congratulate WD for this great player at low money. I wanna salute the help we receive for using the media center through this forum, and the posibility to be heard by someone who listen. I had Popcorn Hour A110 and Tvix 6500 , double and triple priced than WD , i sold them and bouth this unit. I hope to be able to help at the improvement of WD functionality by posting, bugs, needs, oppinons. Thank you!

Welcome aboard bro....

Hope WDTV will give u a good ride...

cheers bro....

Avijeet - Thank you for the warm wellcome, in Romania i paid for it 110 EUR, that's the lower price for WD, but comparing to Popcorn Hour witch is 240EUR, and Tvix 6500 - 340 EUR, the WD it's awsome , i mean comparing price/quality. I agree that bouth tvix and popcorn are a little more advanced than WD ( DTS decoding, LAN, autorun, lcd display) but i don't need them, that's why WD fits perfectly. I am a stereophile guy, i use a CEC 330 stereo amplifier, two Triangle standfloor speakers, and a Harman Kardon DAC. I output the sound from WD in my DAC trough optical output , and after that on amplifier. I will open the WD soon to see if i can improve the digital output quality, and if i'll succed i'll tell you what i had done. Music it's the only thing i am using this media center, i rip my cd collection, and listen them hours and hours without getting bored ( 12 tracks on a cd - sucks) :D
Cheers bro .... !

Thanks for the forum.  I am trying to figure out how to hook up my Buffalo Live Station (XFS file system) so that I can stream MKV movies using the WDTV.  Is this not a supported file system?  Doesn't DVDMOD firmware update resolve this issue?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work.

Hi Everyone

I am big fan of this device .. using personally along side with NetGear and PCH .. and almost all my friend circle using WDTV only (people blame me that I am working under cover sales agent for WDTV  :-*)...

but still I have only one issue that is DVD - Menu ... as we are from Asia and and our film based on good songs and to watch song from hindi movies u have to have a DVD menu other wise .. search/FF and watched desired songs..

I love to see DVD Menu option in WD TV .. don't know when some from WD is going to full fill our most demanded feature request!!!

Long Live WDTV Team .. (especially after providing DVD/ISO Menu navigation)  ;D ;D ;D

I have created this forum to discuss the wonderful new media player from Western Digital.
Hi Jay, thanks for taking the time to create these forums. I usually find 'official' forums can be a bit cagey about the info they give out and a lot of the time, while the staff are hard working, they are usually undermanned.

I'm glad I've found this place, already I've picked up a load of helpful info just by casual browsing.

Also, I can see you're an Avatar fan, same here, cant wait to see it :)

Hi guys!
Happy WD TV owner here :) I have my little device since 2009 and I'm loving it still. Of course, I've been bitching to myself about WD's lack of support for our unit, but it never crossed my mind to look for some unofficial sources. Anyway, I'm glad I found you, I'll be posting some questions shortly.
