Title: noob question - able to play DVD/Blu-ray files?
Post by: slip.cougan on June 23, 2012, 03:43:31 AM
I have been looking at purchasing one of these devices. I had a look at the various media streamers including Apple TV and have pretty much made up my mind that the WD TV Live streaming media player is probably my best bet.
Over the past couple of weeks I have been ripping my DVD/Blu-ray discs to my Seagate Black Armour NAS.

My question as in the title, will the Live TV nativly stream these ripped discs?
Do I need to convert them to a different file format?

If they do play nativly how is playback performance?
Will my DVD's appear in my media library and will the WD display cover art?
Many thanks
Slip

It will play all those, even ISO format if you want.  I don't have a Streaming but my Live plays very well all those format.  You may need to stream via NFS but that should not be an issue.

Thanks RavRov

I may look at converting all my discs to mp4 now as this format is at least supported on Apple devices. (iPhone, iPad)
Not that I am even considering going AppleTV. I did look at this option but the WD seems a far better product from the point of view of the many formats supported.
I have to say that the Apple UI does look a lot slicker than the WD though.
